Now in its 12th year, International Tent is the result of a vision J’miah Nabawi had for the 2005 Savannah Children’s Books Festival. Wish granted, International Tent continues to be a popular feature for storytelling, hands-on activities and literary works that reflect various world cultures and languages. Local schools, international university students attending our local colleges and universities, and other performing and literary artists are often invited to present and participate. This year will bring the return of the dynamic Southside Middle School (a storytelling ensemble of more that 50 plus Drama I & Drama II students with their chaperones) and Fine Arts Department Head, Mrs. Gloria P. Turner from Florence, SC. Savannah State University’s (SSU) International Students Association will occupy the International Tent area with hands-on activities as the lead the International House segment beginning at 1pm.
This year, International Tent will kick off its “The Moral of the Story is . . . Genius is Common” series of stories, folktales, anecdotes and discussion centered around the word GENIUS. What is GENIUS? Who has GENIUS? What’s your GENIUS? With plans to make it an annual featured International Tent event, The Moral of the Story is . . . Genius is Common presentation and soon to be published book, the title of the series was inspired by the quote: Genius is Common. Noted Co-Founder of the award-winning “Russell Simmons Presents, Def Poetry Jam (HBO),” Bruce George, coined the Trademarked phrase that is said to become as popular as Nike’s Just DO it phrase and has already taken on global appeal with translations into several languages. Everyone’s welcomed to come participate and share in the telling of stories, tales and experiences related to International themes, #GENIUS, and learning and speaking other languages at International Tent 2017.
Stand by. There is more to come!
