J’miah Nabawi grounds himself to take flight in more roles for animated voice-acting for film and television; anime; digital media; audiobooks; commercials and more in 2023.

A Philadelphia (PA) native, J’miah Nabawi’s first professional voice animation experience was when he taught English as a Second Language (ESL) while living in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. To make it fun for his mixed class of teens, young adults and senior citizens, he would use bilingual picture books as Readers Theater. To keep from being overly self-conscious of one’s pronunciation and reading aloud, the students had to use voices other than their own and become the character as may have been imagined by the reader. J’miah would first model the reading using various voices himself to get the idea going. “Once it got going, it became a thing and the class eventually turned into an ESL Story Reading Ensemble. We all loved it!” says J’miah.

“When I returned to the States, my initial thought was to continue to pursue teaching English through ESL or TOEFL or something. And then, by a chance visit to the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia, I met the Official Storyteller of Philadelphia, Linda Goss, who was presenting a children’s storytelling program that had the children and their families excited and all into what she was doing. Long story short, through that experience and her encouraging and mentoring me to do performance storytelling, brought me back around to reading storybooks aloud an using the animated voices I had begun using while teaching ESL through Readers Theater in Guadalajara. And here I am!”

Over the years since then, J’miah Nabawi has garnered many awards, proclamations, and legislative citations in recognition for his creative work with children, immigrant communities and family audiences.
